Your Alaska road trip guide

Historic Carcross, Yukon

A half-day driving adventure from Skagway

If you have half a day, you can rent a car and drive the beautiful Klondike Highway to the historic town of Carcross and back. Along the way, you’ll travel from Skagway, Alaska over the spectacular White Pass along the route of the White Pass and Yukon Railway, drive past spectacular lakes and rugged mountain peaks, until you reach Carcross before retracing your route back to Skagway in 4 – 5 hours round trip.

This is an amazing drive through gorgeous scenery. You’ll follow in the very footsteps of the Klondike Gold Rush stampeders and the White Pass Trail and the White Pass and Yukon Railway, see beautiful waterfalls like Pitchfork, Bridal Veil and Moore Creek Falls while catching gorgeous views up the Skagway River Valley and the rugged mountain peaks of the Coast Mountains.

After you ascend the pass you’ll cross the nearly barren beauty of the Tormented Valley and drive past the spectacular forested mountain lakes of Tutshi and the Windy Arm of Tagish Lake before arriving in historic Carcross to explore this ruggedly quaint little town at your leisure. Take a walking tour, drop by the totem pole carving shed and watch carvers in action, or if you’re into outdoor adventure, Carcross has world-class mountain biking, kite-boarding, and hiking.

Then drop by the world’s smallest desert before turning around and driving back to Skagway. You can even continue slightly farther from Carcross to Emerald Lake before turning around for Skagway. It’s just 8 miles farther each way and you’d want to plan for at least another half hour to go there. Car rental in Skagway is available from Avis, Alaska Green Jeeps, (both seasonal) and Sourdough Rentals (year-round).

You can take Road Trip Alaska’s Road to Emerald Lake audio tour  or e-guidebook with you as your personal guide to some of the best sights in the north. It covers the entire route plus the few extra miles to Carcross. You’ll discover hidden attractions, learn about the history, geography, and people of the north, and see the most interesting sights.

You will be entering the country of Canada and will need your passport or other form of ID.
