Things to do in the Skagway area

Skagway
Skagway is full of activities you can do, from shopping and outdoor adventures to exploring historic buildings. And with a car you can explore farther around town, plus take one of the best scenic drives in the north just out of town.

 

There and back in half a day or less

Dazzling Emerald Lake
Travel the Road to Emerald Lake over the spectacular White Pass along the route of the White Pass and Yukon Railway, drive past spectacular lakes and rugged mountain peaks, explore historic Carcross, and see dazzling Emerald Lake before retracing your route back to Skagway.  (4 – 5 hours round trip)

Historic Carcross, Yukon
Follow in the very footsteps of gold rush stampeders as you travel over the spectacular White Pass along the route of the White Pass and Yukon Railway and drive past spectacular lakes and rugged mountain peaks on your way to explore the historic and ruggedly quaint little town of Carcross, Yukon before retracing your route back to Skagway.  (4 hours round trip)

Scenic White Pass Summit
Follow in the very footsteps of gold rush stampeders as you travel over the spectacular White Pass and the route of the White Pass and Yukon Railway, see beautiful Pitchfork and Bridal View Falls, and explore the rugged and scenic Tormented Valley and summit area before retracing your route back to Skagway.  (2 – 3 hours round trip)

 

There and back in a day or overnight

Whitehorse, Yukon
Follow the same route and see everything in the half-day trips including White Pass, Carcross, and Emerald Lake, plus roll down the historic Alaska Highway to the Yukon’s capital city of Whitehorse.  (3 – 4 hours one way)

 

There and back in several days

Golden Circle
A glorious road trip through Alaska and the Yukon, this multi-day route is a loop from Skagway that takes you north to Whitehorse in the Yukon, along the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction, and then down to Haines, Alaska on the coast of the Inside Passage, just 40 miles south of Skagway. You then return to Skagway on the Alaska ferry. (3 – 5 days one way)

Dawson City, Yukon
From Whitehorse, you can continue on to the Klondike gold fields themselves, following the footsteps of the original stampeders along the North Klondike Highway.

Alaska Highway
Near Whitehorse, the Klondike Highway intersects with the world-famous Alaska Highway. You can head south through the Yukon into British Columbia or head north towards Fairbanks, Valdez, or Anchorage. The entire north awaits!

Dempster Highway and the Arctic
An exciting experience awaits you if you’re adventurous enough to drive north from Dawson City into the arctic, over 500 miles of gravel highway to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, or even further to the Inuvialuit village of Tuktoyaktuk.
Note that after leaving Skagway you will shortly be entering the country of Canada and will need your passport or other form of ID.
